Google Business Profile Setup Checklist for Small Businesses

Set up your profile with your real-world business name, an accurate address or service area, regular hours and as few categories as possible, then verify it. After you complete verification, Google says to expect up to 5 business days for review, and later edits usually take up to 10 minutes but can take up to 30 days.
1. Check eligibility
Google asks for a precise, accurate address or service area. P.O. boxes are not acceptable. Virtual offices are not eligible unless they are staffed during business hours and receive customers.
2. Get the name right
Your name should be your real-world name, as used consistently on your storefront, website and stationery. Google says not to add marketing taglines, store codes, trademark symbols, phone numbers, URLs, business hours, location details or service information.
Legal terms such as LLC, Ltd or Inc need real-world proof, like signage, that they are part of your name. I would apply the same test to "Pvt Ltd": if your board does not carry it, leave it out.
3. Address or service area
If customers visit you, enter the address. If you travel to customers, you can have one profile with a designated service area. Google says the area should not extend farther than about 2 hours of driving time from your base. If you work from home, you can hide your address from customers.
4. Hours
Enter your regular customer-facing hours. Google says some business types, such as hotels, schools and appointment-only services, should not list hours.
5. Categories
Use as few categories as possible to describe your core business. Choose the one that completes "This business IS a", not "This business HAS a".
6. Description
Keep it factual. Google does not allow low-quality or irrelevant content, a focus on promotions or pricing, or links in the business description.
7. Verify
The methods include phone or SMS, email, a live video call and a postcard. Some points to remember:
Phone verification needs a number that can receive a code. Automated phone menus cannot receive it.
Most postcard codes arrive within 14 days. Do not edit your business details while you wait, as this invalidates the code.
Video verification needs you to be at the business, showing signage, products or work areas.
Verification through Search Console or bulk verification can be instant.
If the "Get verified" button comes back, Google could not fully verify the profile. Try another method.
8. Know the review times
Google says edits usually take up to 10 minutes to review, but it can sometimes take up to 30 days. An edit shows as accepted, not approved or pending. If it is not approved you can appeal.
Plan changes such as a new phone number or name before a busy season, not during one.
9. Ask for reviews the right way
You may ask customers to review you by sharing a Google link or a QR code. You may not offer incentives such as free or discounted goods or services for reviews. Google treats that as fake engagement. Reply to every review, including negative ones, without sharing personal customer details.
10. Measure
Once verified, Google shows calls, messages, directions, website clicks and the search terms people used. A person is counted once a day.
Google's local ranking depends on relevance, distance and prominence. It also says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking, so complete, accurate information is the main thing in your control.
